Paper 4

Nowadays English is constantly growing with about 1.5 billion people speaking it not including those attempting to learn it. Following this, English has been one of the most important languages to learn as its status continues to grow. English may not always grow as time goes however, as of right now English is growing as more people learn this as their first and second languages.

English remains to grow as a whole but so do technological advancements in today's day and age. For example, people reading articles or excerpts in mostly English will soon be able to have it read to them in different languages like German or japanese. Relating this back to the main question, The English language will always be a part of today's society as it grows even if it means not many people use it there will always be a large majority of people learning it as the population grows at an astounding rate.

The reasoning for a predefined language to be recognized as the global language is for communication reasons between nations. The statement from the article,“more people in China who speak English as a second language”, assists with accumulating an understanding of how globalized the language is as of now. 'Kachru's Circles Model' demonstrates the textual proof in a visual and data-based way. The model shows that in the inner circle, where English is the native language, English is the native or native language of people in the country. This comprises both the United Kingdom and the United States with 320 - 380 people speaking it. While in the Expanding Circle, where English is the unknown dialect. English is spoken as a vehicle of international communication. Within the model providing an elaborated and more detailed data-showing of the proof given from the text, it is apparent that as of now in the international setting that English is globally utilized and moved on by different nations. While nations that have English as their most memorable language tend to not speak another language. WHile this is true China and Russia still have 500- 1000 million speakers.

Furthermore, the article states, “The World Economic Forum estimates about 1.5 billion people around the world speak it – but fewer than 400 million have it as their first language.” To the rest of the people who do not have English as their first language still mostly use it in an everyday scenario whether it is to read a street sign or an article such as the one i read on a website. It is obvious here in the quote shown that English will always be a popular language with countless people speaking it. Some such as Scott Hale, who was a scientist at the Oxford Internet Institute states that more could come with multilingual speakers. Thus being said, English could die down and still be spoken but not be a main language.

While our present language in our country is english other countries are continuing to learn and teach English as they may not speak it to have it be a common used language in their government and society. With the advancement of societies countries will change and rotate focus in languages.

  1. Hi Troy! After reading your response to the paper 4 question, I personally don’t think that you followed through with the assignment. You begin your response by explaining how right now, ‘English is growing as more people learn…’. While this may be true, the overall message of the text given was to show the most important issues raised in the text when referring to the English language. While you do explain ‘technological advancements’, you only mention it in a general sense and then go on to explain how the English language will ‘always be a part of today’s society’. While this is a possibility, I feel as though this did not answer the question or follow what was being asked. You kept relating back to English being the ‘global language’ and how people will always continue learning it. I don’t personally think that this is what the question wanted.
I like how you included Kachru’s Circles Model, however I feel as though you really only explained the concept of it rather than how it doesn’t relate to the text. You state ‘detailed data-showing of the proof given from the text’, however I also don’t agree that this relates to the text. Kachru’s model explains the expansion of the English language, yet the text explains how technology might stop this expansion.
For AO1, I think you had a limited understanding of the text when referring to meaning, context, and audience. 2 marks.
For AO2, I would say that you had a clear expression, however it did not flow easily and there were frequent grammatical errors. For the most part, your content was mostly relevant. 2 marks.
For AO4, I believe that you only showed a basic understanding of linguistic issues and concepts as you failed to correctly answer the question. You also only showed a minimal reference to your wider study. 2 marks.
    Total- 6 marks/25 marks
