paper 3 blog - PAPPIIIII CHULLOOOO
Text A is an excerpt written by Edward Berens, which is a letter written by an uncle to a nephew in 1832. Following this meaning that the lexus and form of language choice is similar but not exact to modern English now in the present day. The lexus and form change originates at the beginning of text A when it says the text is a series of letters which are hardly used now in modern day. We communicate through Emails and text messages similar but not exact to a letter. This also pushes me to expand on how advancements in technology have influenced this as well.
In text A Edward states the word ‘company’ used to represent a goal or group which is referred to in the same sentence of the word in which it was used. This shows a semantic change in the language used in Text A as nowadays we would use the word “Company” to represent a Commercial Business started by the ‘Company’ owner. The word Company has expanded since then as previously stated with the technological advancements and with businesses expanding every single day. With almost 150 years apart in writing lexical changes we have come out with more economic change as we have become more of a capitalist government forcing more people to start Companies to make money. This one word has change its meaning over time with national growth in our country and with lexical changes in our linguistic system.
Text B is a collocates chart that has a list of Adjectives that correlate with the words such as Judgement and Taste. The Colocates chart was referring to the British National Corpus ranging from the years 1890 and 1993. One of the words stated,’Judgment’, corresponds with the words ‘better’ and ‘clinical’ as shown in the chart which can also correlate with words ‘personal’ and ‘good’. This is showing semantic changes as all 4 words have lexical similarities at different points in time as the word has adapted multiple meanings over the course of many decades. As these words change over time the words also expand. This goes to show the theory made by a man named Wright who said that as language grows and people move, the language is influenced by contact with other languages. As time went on with the word such as taste it was moved to change meaning from how you feel like something “taste” referring to a personal sense and food, it evolved to how you feel about something or someone which correlates with the word judgment which is defined by one's feelings on an action or thing.
Text C is an n-gram graph for the phrases are apt to be’ ,’are likely to be’ and ’tend to be’ ranging from the years 1800 to the year 2008. In the graph it shows how each word's usage changed over time and how some became more popular rather than others. In text a the least used phrases ‘are apt to be ’ was used by the writer with a text used in an older format in the year 1832. This goes to show that this word's usage decreased and was not used because the other phrases were not as popular as the letters were written in the time where the phrase was more popular. After this certain point the phrase ‘are apt to be’ is used less frequently and becomes less used as time goes on. A theory that follows this evidence is the S-Curve theory which states that the language phrases start to limit the adapts and changes. This is showing in the n gram chart by the differences in each year with the phrases usages increasing and decreasing over time.

ReplyDelete-Your opening paragraph was great! The only thing that would have made it better was if you included the fact that it is the functional theory. This hits a buzzword and also shows you can apply your knowledge. Also, your evaluation of the word “company” was really clever; I didn’t even notice that! I felt that you effectively expressed how and why the changes over time were made.
You were always on topic and consistently brought up new points and your writing was organized based on the text that you were referring to. Only thing: when doing so, try to use more buzzwords to increase your chance at earning more points!

-I saw consistent use of theories and concepts, which clearly shows that you are aware of the changes that have occurred. I would have just split them up a bit more.

-I did not really see any part of your writing where you evaluated multiple texts at once. Remember for next time to compare texts and show how they tie together. For instance, you could discuss both Text A and Text B by mentioning “taste.” As this is the case, your score cannot reach any of the higher marks.

ReplyDeleteThere were a few minor errors in language but they did not impede communication at all. All of your content was relevant and your ideas were developed clearly. In paragraph 3, when you talk about the theory made by Wright, I wish you would have named the theory. This way you could hit a buzzword and score more points.
AO4: 3/5 marks
You had a clear understanding of linguistic choices. You showed this by giving clear examples and explaining each one. The same goes for the theories mentioned. You made sure to go into detail with your examples rather than just state them.
AO5: 8/15 marks
You had a clear analysis of the language data. You seemed to talk about each text separately, when you could have combined two or more texts together. You also had a clear and appropriate selection of language data from each source. Each example for your sources were relevant to the point you were trying to make.

ReplyDeleteThroughout your whole blog there are some errors but it doesn’t impede communication. The expression is clear and the whole blog is on task. Your writing is clear but could have used some stronger points to have made it effective. There is one area where you should have written “Text A” but instead wrote “text A”. It's not a major deal, but try to stick to the correct capitalization of the titles.

You gave detailed information for all the points you made and provided evidence to back it up. Although some sentences like “ the theory made by a man named Wright” instead of naming the actual theory, it seems like you were just trying to reach the word count. Also instead of

Although you mentioned the multiple texts, you didn’t really evaluate them at all. In the future, remember to compare as much of the texts as you can. It will help you score higher.
