Gatsby and the Partys

As each party in the book ‘The Great Gatsby’ is vastly different from each other I will be describing why I believe that I would want to go to Gatsby's party over Daisy’s and Myrtle's. I will also be describing who went to each party and what the different settings were in each party.

Firstly, In Daisy’s party it began in a “Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay” as stated on page 6 with “broken by a line of french windows, glowing now with reflected gold.” This then went on to mean that the party was at a rich place. As each character was introduced, one of the first ones was Daisy. Daisy was a bubbly girl that everyone seemed to enjoy being around; opposed to Tom who was arrogant and already accomplished everything as a hall of fame football player, as stated on page 7,”two judgemental arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face.” After this another character was introduced named Mrs.Baker who always answered to a question that was asked or was in every conversation. And the final character that was introduced was Tom and Daisy's daughter who had little to no importance in the chapter.

Now for the reason why I chose to not pick this party was because there were too many problems and fights going on that turned the party into a tension filled drama circle. It began with Daisy finding out that her husband Tom had an affair with a girl in New York and spoke to Nick to get her mind off of it and lead to a conversation about how Tom never cared about their daughter. This party seemed to be like a big gossip circle I just wouldn't want to be a part of. Another way to prove this is that rumors were being spread as stated in page 19,”The fact that gossip had published banns was one of the reasons I had come east.”

Moving on to Myrtle's party in chapter 2. It began describing where the party was and how it began. The setting of the party was,”The valley of ashes is bounded on one side by a small river, and, when the drawbridge is up to let barges through.” Then goes to describe that it was a ghost town,”The only building in sight was a small block of yellow brick sitting on the edge of waste land, a sort of compact Main Street ministering to it, and contiguous to absolutely nothing.” Now moving on to each of the characters that were involved with Myrtles party. Firstly Myrtle, who was introduced as Toms Mystris and Mr.Wilson's wife. Secondly, Nick who was in All 3 parties and was involved in most of the”dramma ” that happened in all 3 parties. Lastly Tom, who was the center of attention in the second party as it was his girlfriend who was introduced to also be cheating on her husband. The other main character in this was Cathryn, or Myrtle’s sister who was instigating the affair to become much more than that in the second chapter. Tom later in the story realises that he doesn't like Mrs.Wilson as she made fun of his current wife and Tom reacted in a brutal way breaking Myrtle's nose. Mr.Mckee and Mrs.Mckee didn't know how to react as it was a brutal and suspenseful scene at the party. Personally I would not want to be a part of this due to the fact that everyone was fighting and there were too many people at this party.

Moving on to the last party featuring Gatsby. This party was in the west egg next door to Nick's house. It stated on the first page of the chapter,”There was music from my neighbor house through summer nights...On weekends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus bearing party long past midnight.” “At Least once a fortnight a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas to make a christmas tree of Gatsby’s Enormous garden” Most of the setting was describing someone's house who had money. The inside of Gatsby's party was also described as a big concert with bands playing as well as having drinks and food. The characters who showed up to the party were Nick and Gatsby who was described as a “young rough-neck, a year or two over thirty, whose elaborate formality of speech was just missed.” Jordan backer who was previously mentioned as the famous golf player was also described; and the man who does not know how to drive. Most of the drama that happened in chapter 3 was just that Nick was catching feelings with Jordan Baker who was a liar and dishonest person as stated on page 58. Gatsby’s party seemed fun and like a place normal people would want to go to party normally. It is also much more formal due to the fact that Gatsby has much more money and many more people go there just for fun so you wouldn't be alone.

If I were to go to the other 2 parties I would just find myself stuck in a fluster of drama. However, Gatsbys seemed much more chill and exciting to go to.
