Gatsby 4-6

Gatsby's past and present which are all talked about in chapters 4-6; show great connection with the epigraph at the beginning of the book,’The Great Gatsby’ It shows how Gatsby relates with the gold hat and the bouncer and also shows how Daisy relates to the girl the epigraph is talking about when it states “I must have you.” Chapters 4-6 speak on how Gatsby tries to figure out a way to get Daisy back over several years of distance and when he gets the chance he blows it until Nick has some words of wisdom.

In the Book, ‘The Great Gatsby’ The character gatsby is described and talked about his future with the characters, Daisy and Nick. We find out that Gatsby has had a past with daisy in chapter 5 when it states,”I turned toward Gatsby and he was no longer there.” This quote was showing that Gatsby felt some sort of embarrassment or shame due to his past with Tom Buchanan's wife. Later in chapters 5 and 6 we find out how Gatsby tries to use his money to Bribe Daisy into falling into love all over again with him. I will be discussing Gatsby relates to the Epigraph,”Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her; if you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cry, “ Lover gold hatted, high bouncing lover, i must have you.”in the book The Great Gatsby.

The first sentence in the epigraph is talking about wearing a gold hat. This is figuratively meaning that by wearing a gold hat one is showing off wealth and having money. Then it further goes to say “ if that will move her” This means that If you need to be wealthy to earn a girl's attention then be wealthy. Which is exactly what Gatsby did in paragraph 5 when he states,”such beautiful shirts...It makes me sad because i've never seen such beautiful shirts before.” This is Daisy responding to taking heart in Gatsby's money and how he spent it on clothes to try and earn Daisy's heart.

The epigraph talks about how if someone can earn the girl then to earn her but money can earn one as well. Gatsby tried taking money as a choice to earn the woman he wanted as in this quote he wanted to show Daisy his house and how big it was.”My house looks well, Doesn't it?” Gatsby is looking for Daisy to notice how much money he has so maybe she will feel the same way about him because Gatsby cannot “bounce high” as stated in the epigraph.

The last part of the epigraph talks about how IF one can earn a girl with money or personality then the girl will chase after you. Now this relates to Gatsby's past and his present. This relates to Gatsby's past when Gatsby earned Daisy when they were young adults with his charisma and character; moreover, it shows how Gatsby also tried to earn her with money and it worked as they proceeded to kiss at the end of chapter six.”At his lips touch she blossomed for him like a flower.”

These Examples show how Gatsby relates to the Golden Hat spoken about in the epigraph and how it can earn a girl's love, also spoken about in the epigraph. Gatsby uses his money and even tries to get Nick to clean himself up so Gatsby doesn't look like he has poor friends or lives in a poor neighborhood by having Nick cut his grass. This then continues to Daisy and Gatsby finding their way to happiness.
